" American Nightmare "

EXTRACT FROM EBOOK : However, the sense of resignation, the sense of grief that I was feeling was now beginning to become more pronounced, and the niggling anxiety which was always lurking there or thereabouts was now, not only coming to the forefront when I was drinking, but was becoming part of my thoughts on an almost daily basis. This anxiety and what it represented was also rapidly evolving into a more definite form, a more concrete thought and was rooted in the belief that I was being robbed of what should have been the best and most fulfilling years of my life.

This story is about “ The Great United States of America ”.Everything in it actually happened to me.It’s a story which covers a ten year period, from 1992-2002.

I was living in Germany perfectly normally and happily when my brother, who was living in Ireland, thought that it would be a good idea to apply for a Morrison Visa for me.The Morrison Visa was a program run by the American and Irish Governments in the early 90s.It was a lottery type program, whereby someone, even if the applicant wasn’t living in Ireland, could make as many applications as possible for and on behalf of an individual. This was done for me and I happened to be one, of the many, who ended up getting a ten year visa to work and live in America.

I was at the tender age age of 32 !, when I took up the visa in the summer of 1992, leaving behind me a relatively contented and normal lifestyle in Germany, but full of optimism for what the future and " The Land of Milk and Honey " had to offer. This was to mark the beginning of a spiralling out of control journey for myself, a journey which was to bring with it deep, dark visions and experiences of aspects of society and traits of a system which I had, hitherto, been completely unawares of, and a journey which was to last for ten gruelling years.

“ The Land of Opportunity ” I knew, before I went, it certainly wasn’t, as naivety wasn’t one of my better qualities, given that I had already lived in London and Frankfurt. However, what I didn’t expect was “ The Land of Hell on Earth ”.The famous book by Jack Kerouac “ On The Road ” springs to mind, with all those happy go lucky, fun loving people having a wonderful time travelling the lenth and breath of America.Well this book will be a bit different !.From Chicago`s Cook County State Penitentiary, to the Downtown State Correctional Facility of Atlanta, Georgia. From Panama City tv courts, to the State Juvenile Detention Centre of Las Vegas
,Nevada. From the Big Apple, to the Bad Apple, to Manhattens hospitality suite named " Bellevue ".From blood banks, to sperm banks, to plasma banks, to drug trials. From minimum wage jobs, one after the other, “ what would you like madam/sir,plastic or paper ", to the quest for self-employment, self sustaining income. From laughter, to hope, to despair, to desperation, to isolation, to emotional abysses. All and more will be revealed during the course of this book.
