8. Las Vegas | Bright Lights Introduction E-mail

I arrived in Vegas early the next morning.I was once more in the same disaster-prone situation of not knowing anything about the city, especially in relation to its layout.I didn’t know downtown from uptown, uptown from midtown, midtown from lower downtown ....

Las Vegas at night

I had arranged with Brendan to meet him over the bridge which intersects the Mgm and Excalibur Casinos.Finding this place sounds easy in theory, but when you have no knowledge of the city whatsoever, and only twenty dollars in your pocket, these sort of simple things can become quite fucking difficult.

I spent my first day roaming around the streets of Downtown Vegas trying to get my bearings right.I did manage to come across the famous Vegas Strip which is where most of the casinos are located. However, the strip itself, although it is a straight road, runs for about two and a half miles.I only made it halfway up the strip that day and having caught no sight of a bridge, or either of the mentioned casinos, I turned back towards downtown, and so, unsurprisingly, I never met up with Brendan that day.

I spent my first night in Vegas sleeping rough, somewhere just off downtown.Although Vegas is located slap bang in the middle of a desert, and although during the day it tends to get very hot, I can assure people that at around five in the morning its fucking freezing, at least when I was there which was in November.I woke up that morning shivering with the cold, and reflected, so much for the bright lights of fucking Vegas.
