14.Manhatten - YMCA ! E-mail

I ended up getting a room in one of those semi-expensive flop houses, which I talked about earlier and which Manhatten is so notorious for, that was situated on Manhattens upper west side at 79th street and seventh avenue.I was paying $125 a week and there are really no other options to this form of accomodation in Manhatten once you have only got a few hundred dollars in your pocket.I did actually try the YMCA, as I had remembered the words of the famous song :

Continued :

“ Young man there's no need to feel down, I said young man : pick yourself off the ground, I said young man : when your short on your dough, there will always be a place for you at the Y--M--C--A, the fucking Y--M--C--A, if your down on your luck, come in anytime any day, cause it’s a fun place to stay at the Y-M-C-A, the fucking Y---M---C---A-- ”.

There were plenty of rooms available alright, but I was quoted a price of around $70 a night and I walked out of there in quite a puzzled state. It still makes me laugh, even to this very day, when I hear the YMCA being mentioned, be it either in a song or in general, and I can only assume that’s its an organisation dedicated purely to the persuit of helping out young up and coming yuppies, who on their way to eventual fame and fortune or , perhaps, its run by an Irish catholic father figure who enjoys the odd trip to Vegas.
